Capital of the state of Tyrol, Innsbruck is Austria’s winter sports capital. It offers a fantastic mix of Baroque and Gothic architecture combined with a simply magnificent natural setting. The surrounding mountains and Nordkette mountain range are easily accessible, whether snow-capped or lush in the spring. The cable car ride from the city to 2,000m takes just 20 minutes. Even back in the Aldstadt von Innsbruck (the old town) there are great views from the Stradtturm (Town Tower) and two interesting churches, the Hofkirche and the Cathedral of St. James. Tours of the Imperial Palace and restaurants specialising in Tyrolean cuisine are among Innsbruck’s many other highlights.
