The small town of Lenzburg holds some of the most interesting historical sights in Aargau. The region is famed for its castles, of which Lenzburg’s clifftop fortress is among the most spectacular. Home to counts, dukes and poets over its 900-year history, it’s been sensitively renovated and hosts a variety of events that bring the Middle Ages to life. In the medieval old town itself, the Museum Burghalde delves back even further into Switzerland’s past and preserves a collection of Russian icons. For great views over the Lenzburg, it’s an hour or so’s hike to the Esterliturm observation tower. Those who tackle its 253 are rewarded with vistas as far afield as the Black Forest.
