A Hanseatic Heritage
Limbaži is an ancient city with many sites of great historic importance. For visitors, it has the benefit of being small enough to explore largely on foot, with a population of well under 10,000. It’s a city with much to offer anyone tracing the Hanseatic history of Latvia. One particularly relevant sight is the ruined castle and watchtower dating from the medieval period. There are also several architecturally interesting churches, such as the Limbaži Evangelical Lutheran Church, dating to the 17th century, and the early 20th-century Transfiguration of Christ Orthodox Church. Accessing the outdoors here is easy, with the nature trails and Blue Flag beach by Lielezers Lake being popular with locals and visitors alike.
The Hansa is the only cultural route that currently runs through the city.
