A wonderful natural setting, numerous wineries and a magical, mostly pedestrianised old town make Slovenia’s second city a must-visit, although many travellers don’t make it this far east from Ljubljana. It’s not a city to approach with a packed itinerary, but one to explore at a leisurely pace. Beyond sampling the local wines and dipping into the poignant National Liberation Museum, activities here are low-key and worth taking time over. Visitors should check out the Maribor Regional Museum, located inside the 15th-century Maribor Castle, and explore the city’s Jewish heritage. At night, Maribor comes to life as the city’s bar and restaurant scene gets into full swing.
