Prien am Chiemsee

Explore Germany

A 90-minute drive from Munich lies Prien am Chiemsee, one of the member cities of the Impressionnisms Routes and the birthplace of one of the most important artists’ colonies in Germany, populated by the likes of Hugo Kauffmann and Christian Christoph Ruben. After visiting the Chiemsee in 1828, landscape painter Maximilian Haushofer returned to Munich and spoke about the island, which helped bring the first batch of artists in 1829. The painters were attracted to the island’s light and called themselves “Pleinairists,” since they focused strongly on plein air painting.
