Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a chocolate-box medieval town whose name means “above the Tauber River”, is one on the most popular sights on Germany’s Romantic Road and an important stop on the Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela. Its timber-framed houses and cobbled streets have changed little over the years, with the oldest dating back to the 10th century. Many pilgrims head straight for St James’s Church, where the Reliquary of the Holy Blood is preserved in a magnificent altar. Those with staying for longer can explore the town’s old Dominican convent, now the Reichsstadtmuseum, or walk the 2.5km route around the town walls.
