Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg is the most easterly county in Hungary, bordering Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. Its cool, wet plains are predominantly agricultural, although there are a few towns of note, including the county’s cultural centre Nyíregyháza and Nyírtass, which is renowned for its rich Jewish history. The northwest of the region also reaches the edges of Tokaj, home to the vineyards where Hungary’s famous sweet wines are made. For those following the Routes of Reformation, the sights of interest are the Reformation churches found in the county’s smaller settlements: Ajak, Márokpapi, Sonkád and Vámosoroszi.
