The Birthplace of Saint Martin
Szombathely and Saint Martin have long been entwined. This Roman city in the western part of Hungary, once known as Savaria, is the birthplace of the Bishop of Tours. It quickly rose to be an integral part of the Via Sancti Martini pilgrimage route, and Saint Martin’s acts of kindness and benevolence are honoured in the city’s churches, statues and works of art. Szombathely’s Roman ruins, leafy parks, boating lake and cafés make for a tranquil and cultured getaway.
The only cultural route that currently stops in Szombathely is Saint Martin of Tours Route.
