A Cradle of Intellectualism
Tartu is one of the cities that belong to The Hansa Cultural Route. Although many of its most notable historic buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries rather than the medieval period, it’s easy to see how the bounty of the Hanseatic era benefited this stately city. It has long been viewed as a hub of intellectual and artistic energy, and remains a prominent university town to this day. Excellent museums and cultural attractions abound, there’s an extraordinarily well-preserved historic city centre, and the large student population keeps the nightlife buzzing.
